# IRCC Tracker Status Meanings Explained — What Every Status Means
The IRCC online tracker shows a single status for your citizenship application at any one time, but each status hides a wide range of possible activities behind the scenes. This guide decodes every status you will see between the day you apply and the day you take the oath.
Where to find your tracker status
Sign in to your IRCC Secure Account at canada.ca (or via the *Account Login* page on the IRCC website). Once signed in, open the View my submitted applications or profiles section and click the row for your citizenship application. The status appears at the top of the page in a coloured pill — green, blue, amber, or red depending on the state.

The five statuses you will see
1. Application Received
The starting state. IRCC has logged your application and assigned a file number. No officer has actively touched it yet. Expect this status for 2–6 months depending on processing volumes.
2. In Progress
An officer is actively reviewing your file, or a process step is scheduled (knowledge test invitation, interview, ceremony). This is the longest-lived status — files often spend 6–18 months in *In Progress* as they cycle through the major steps.
A file in *In Progress* may stay there even when nothing visible is happening, because security and background checks run in the background without changing the tracker.
3. Decision Made
An officer has recorded a final decision on the file. The outcome letter — approval, refusal, or return for incomplete information — arrives in your IRCC account messages within 1–14 days. The tracker itself does not say which outcome was made.
In practice, around 90% of *Decision Made* statuses are followed by an approval, because most refusals are flagged earlier as *Action Required* and resolved before the final decision step.
4. Action Required
IRCC needs something from you — a document, a corrected form, a fee payment, a clarification. The tracker will say *Action Required* in amber or red. Always click into your IRCC account messages immediately to see exactly what is needed and what the deadline is.
Common reasons:
- A document IRCC requested earlier was not received
- A photo was rejected for not meeting the citizenship-format spec
- Your physical-presence calculator shows a possible miscalculation
- A fee was not paid in full
5. Closed (rare)
Used when an application has been withdrawn or returned and is no longer in the queue. You will see this if you withdrew voluntarily or if IRCC returned your file as incomplete.
When statuses update
There is no fixed daily refresh time. Updates happen whenever an officer takes an action — sometimes overnight, sometimes during business hours, sometimes on weekends if you are in a city with weekend ceremonies. Most candidates check daily; checking once a week is enough.
What to do if your status has not changed for months
A static status for 3–6 months is normal in 2026 due to processing volumes. Before contacting IRCC, ask yourself:
