# How Long After the Test Until the Citizenship Ceremony?
The most common question after passing the citizenship test is "when is my ceremony?". This guide gives realistic expectations based on 2026 data and explains what speeds the wait up — or slows it down.
Average wait in 2026
For an applicant who:
- Passed the knowledge test on the first attempt
- Has no flags on their file (clean security and tax checks)
- Is open to either online or in-person ceremony
…the typical wait is 2–4 months from the day they pass the test to the day they take the oath. Some files reach ceremony in 6–8 weeks; others take 6–8 months.
What happens between test and ceremony
Week 1–2 — Test result
You see a preliminary on-screen result at the end of the online test (or in your IRCC account a few days later for in-person tests). The official confirmation letter follows in your IRCC account messages within 7–14 days.
Week 2–8 — Background checks finalised
Most security and CBSA cross-verification happens during the year of processing, so by the time you have passed the test, these checks are usually complete. Sometimes a flag triggers a final review — this can add 4–12 weeks.
Week 4–16 — Decision Made
The tracker switches to Decision Made. This means the officer has formally approved your file. The decision is recorded; ceremony scheduling begins.
Week 6–24 — Ceremony invitation
You receive a Notice to Appear in your IRCC online account messages, usually 4–12 weeks after Decision Made. The notice includes:
- The date, time, and format (online or in-person) of the ceremony
- Logistics (Zoom link if online, address if in-person)
- A list of what to bring
2–6 weeks later — Ceremony day
You take the oath, become a Canadian citizen, and receive (or are mailed) the certificate.
What slows the wait down
| Factor | How much it adds |
|---|---|
| Outstanding background check | 4–12 weeks |
| Failed first knowledge test | Adds the retest cycle (4–8 weeks per attempt) |
| Oral hearing required | 4–6 months |
| In-person ceremony requested in busy city | 4–8 weeks beyond online wait |
| Reschedule request | 4–12 weeks per reschedule |
| Outstanding tax or document issues | 4–16 weeks while resolved |

What speeds the wait up
| Factor | How much it saves |
|---|---|
| Online ceremony accepted | 2–6 weeks vs in-person |
| Smaller cities outside major metros | 2–4 weeks (fewer files in queue) |
| All documents clean from day one | Avoids fairness-letter delays (4–12 weeks) |
| Open to any weekday for ceremony | 2–4 weeks (more slots available) |
What you can do during the wait
- Watch your IRCC online account messages for the Notice to Appear
- Plan around possible ceremony dates — avoid booking non-refundable travel in the next 2–4 months
- Prepare for the ceremony — read about [the oath](/blog/oath-of-citizenship-canada-ceremony-guide-2026), [what to bring](/blog/canadian-citizenship-ceremony-what-to-bring), [what to wear](/blog/canadian-citizenship-ceremony-how-long)
- Apply for a Canadian passport as soon as you have the certificate — see [Applying for Passport After Citizenship](/blog/apply-canadian-passport-after-citizenship)
What to do if the wait exceeds 8 months
If you have been Decision Made for more than 4 months without a ceremony invitation, or you passed the test more than 8 months ago with no Decision Made, send a webform via your IRCC online account asking for a status update. Webform responses arrive in 14–30 days.

Frequently Asked Questions
1Why does the wait between test and ceremony vary so much?
Three main reasons: (1) **background checks** — security and CBSA checks may take longer for some files, (2) **ceremony slot availability** — large cities have more ceremonies but also longer queues, (3) **in-person vs online** — online ceremonies usually schedule faster because they are not bound by venue availability.
2What does 'Decision Made' on the tracker mean for ceremony timing?
It means an officer has approved your file (or recorded another decision). For approvals, ceremony invitations typically arrive **4–12 weeks** after Decision Made. The lag is the time it takes IRCC to schedule you into the next available ceremony slot.
3Can I request a faster ceremony?
Only with strong justification — pending international travel for a family emergency, a job offer requiring proof of citizenship, etc. Send a webform via your IRCC online account explaining the urgency. Most files do not qualify for expedited ceremonies.
4Can I delay my ceremony if the date is bad for me?
Yes. Reply to the Notice to Appear via your IRCC online account before the ceremony date and request rescheduling. IRCC usually offers 1–3 alternative dates within the next 1–3 months. Repeated reschedule requests may push you to the back of the queue.
5Does it matter if I passed by 15 vs 19 out of 20?
No. Once you pass the knowledge test, your score does not affect anything else — including ceremony timing. The same applies for whether you passed on the first attempt or a retake.
