What the 30-Day Window Means for Online Tests
Since March 2026, the citizenship test is taken online. When you receive your invitation:
- You have exactly 30 calendar days from the email date
- You can take the test any day, any time within those 30 days
- There is no specific appointment — you schedule yourself
- The window is non-negotiable — day 31, the link expires
If You Are Going to Miss the Window
Act BEFORE the deadline:
If you know you cannot take the test within the 30 days, contact IRCC before the window expires. This is much easier to resolve than contacting them after.
How to contact IRCC:
- Online: Submit a request through the IRCC web form
- Phone: Call 1-888-242-2100 (Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm local time)
- Include: Your UCI number, application number, and detailed explanation
If You Already Missed the Window
Step 1: Contact IRCC immediately
Do not wait. The sooner you contact them, the better your chances of getting a new invitation without your application being closed.
Step 2: Provide a written explanation
Clearly explain why you missed the test. Be specific about dates and circumstances.
Step 3: Include documentation
Supporting evidence strengthens your case:
- Medical certificate (if illness)
- Travel documents (if emergency travel)
- Screenshots of technical errors (if platform issues)
- Any other relevant proof
Acceptable Reasons for Missing the Test
IRCC generally accepts these reasons:
- Serious illness or hospitalization — provide a doctor's note
- Family emergency — death, serious illness of immediate family
- Unavoidable travel emergency — stranded abroad, flight cancellations
- Technical problems — test platform errors, internet outage, webcam failure
- Natural disaster — flood, fire, earthquake affecting your location
Reasons That May NOT Be Accepted
- Forgot to check email
- Was too busy with work
- Did not feel prepared for the test
- Was on vacation (planned, non-emergency travel)
- Did not read the invitation carefully
Risk of Application Closure
If you miss your test and do NOT contact IRCC:
- IRCC may send a follow-up notice asking you to explain
- If you do not respond to the follow-up, your application will likely be closed
- A closed application means starting over — new application, new fees ($630)
- Your waiting time (12-22 months) resets to zero
This is entirely preventable. A quick call or web form submission is all it takes.
How to Prevent Missing Your Test
- Check your email daily once your application is 8+ months old
- Whitelist IRCC email addresses so invitations do not go to spam
- Take the test early in the 30-day window, not at the end
- Keep your contact information updated in your IRCC account
- Have your equipment ready in advance (computer, webcam, internet)
