Before Test Day

Receiving Your Notice

After submitting your citizenship application and it is approved for processing, IRCC will send you a Notice to Appear for the citizenship test. This notice includes the date, time, and location of your test. You typically receive the notice several weeks before your test date.

What to Bring

You must bring the following to your test:

  • Your Notice to Appear
  • Your Permanent Resident Card (or travel document)
  • Two pieces of personal identification
  • All your passports and travel documents (current and expired)
  • Any other documents specified in your notice
  • How to Prepare

The test is based entirely on the Discover Canada study guide. We recommend:

  • Reading the entire guide at least twice
  • Taking multiple practice tests (CitizenPass offers 600+ questions)
  • Focusing on your weak areas identified through practice
  • Getting a good night's sleep before the test
  • On Test Day

    Arrival and Check-In

Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time. When you arrive at the testing location, a citizenship official will check your identity documents and guide you to the testing room.

    The Testing Environment

The test is usually held at a local IRCC office. The room is set up like a classroom or examination hall. You will be seated and given instructions before the test begins. Electronic devices (phones, tablets) are not allowed during the test.

    Taking the Test

    Format: 20 multiple-choice questions

    Time: 45 minutes

    Passing Score: 15 out of 20 (75%)

Language: Available in English or French

The questions cover all topics from the Discover Canada guide, including:

  • Canadian history
  • Geography and regions
  • Government and democracy
  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Canadian symbols
  • Economy and trade
  • Tips During the Test

  • Read each question carefully before answering
  • If unsure, eliminate obviously wrong answers first

    After the Test

    Receiving Results

In most cases, you will receive your results immediately or shortly after the test. If you pass, you will be informed about the next step: the citizenship ceremony.

    If You Pass

Congratulations! You will be scheduled for a citizenship ceremony where you will take the Oath of Citizenship and officially become a Canadian citizen. At the ceremony, you will receive your citizenship certificate.

    If You Do Not Pass

If you score below 75%, you will be scheduled for a second test. The second test may be written or oral. If you do not pass the second time, your case may be referred to a citizenship official for further review.

Most applicants who study properly pass on their first attempt. CitizenPass users have a high pass rate because our AI-powered system ensures thorough preparation.

    The Citizenship Ceremony

The ceremony is the final step. You will:

  • Take the Oath of Citizenship alongside other new citizens
  • Receive your citizenship certificate
  • Optionally, sign the Oath of Citizenship register
  • The ceremony is a celebration of your achievement. Family and friends are often welcome to attend.
